Andrea Dossena believes Jurgen Klopp “is missing just one piece to complete a stratospheric squad” – and that man is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. The former Reds defender was speaking to Radio Musica TV, as cited by Goal.com.

The 38-year-old, who currently manages A.C. Crema, represented the Anfield club between July 2008 and January 2010, making 31 appearances for the club.  Dossena pointed out that Napoli are highly unlikely to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League – they currently trail Atalanta in the fourth position by nine points – and that as a result, the Neapolitans may be forced to “give up some important players”.

What do we think?

It’s clear from the above responses that these Liverpool fans would be keen on signing Koulibaly – even if only as a backup for Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. In our view, there is no doubt Kalidou Koulibaly would improve the squad. The 28-year-old, currently valued at £50.4m (via Transfermarkt.co.uk), has averaged an impressive performance rating of 7.43/10 in this season’s UEFA Champions League (via WhoScored.com).

The financial impact the current global pandemic will have on those hoping to enter the transfer market this summer remains unclear and so whilst we believe Koulibaly is a top player, Liverpool may feel they have other priorities and that the sum which would be required to land the Senegalese defender could prove to be a problem.
