Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is still “open to offers to sell” the club, amid alleged interest from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), according to a recent report from chroniclelive.co.uk, which was written by Lee Ryder.

After contacting the Magpies directly, chroniclelive.co.uk has recently confirmed that Newcastle United “have maintained their ‘no comment’ status” around the sale of the club. However, this recent report also shares that Newcastle United sources have allegedly declared that “the emphasis is still on the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and Amanda Staveley to make the deal happen”.

Here’s what was said:

“The club are believed to have complied with the Premier League as far as paperwork is concerned but club sources insist that a deal has still not been agreed with Ashley.

“The Toon owner is believed to be in the United States despite a troubled week last week as Sports Direct hit the headlines for the wrong reasons.

“We understand that dialogue with the PIF has been ongoing with Newcastle but while talk of paperwork being submitted to the Premier League is accurate, a concrete offer for United is yet to arrive.”

Who is Newcastle's top goalscorer in the league?

Ashley has been embroiled in some controversy of late, with the Magpies owner, who is also the founder of sportswear and retail store Sports Direct, recently making a public apology after claiming that Sports Direct “was an essential operator for keeping the nation fit” following British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s orders that all “non-essential shops” were to close, as reported by the BBC on 24th March.

Following Johnson’s orders, a tweet which shared an alleged image of a “Sports Direct warehouse” on 25th March caught the attention of some Magpies supporters on social media, who directed frustration towards Ashley in response, with one Magpies supporter claiming that this image showed that Ashley was “clearly not following” the British government’s guidelines.

It may be fair to say that feeling frustration towards Ashley hasn’t been a rarity for Newcastle United fans in recent history. The 55-year-old has been an unpopular figure among Magpies supporters ever since he originally completed his takeover of the club back in 2007

Considering how unpopular Ashley has been during his tenure as owner of the club, it may be fair to say that some Newcastle fans will be pleased to see the back of the 55-year-old should he sell up.
