Former England international Kevin Phillips has urged Newcastle United to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard soon.

Phillips was recently talking to Football Insider in a recent interview and revealed that it would be ‘interesting’ if the Magpies can beat competition from other clubs to sign Edouard. Phillips also believed that £30 million is nothing for a player like Edouard.

Which club did Larsson join Celtic from?

When asked if Newcastle would be a good move for the Frenchman, he said:

“Every Premier League club wants two or three quality strikers. They have got Dwight Gayle but whether they see him as number one, I am not sure.

“It is an area they will be looking at and it will be interesting if they can get this lad from Celtic. There will likely be clubs higher than Newcastle in the Premier League that also want him. £30 million nowadays is nothing.”

Impressive this season

Edouard has been in fine goalscoring form for the Hoops this season. The Frenchman has made 45 appearances in all competitions so far and he has already racked up as many as 27 goals, also picking up 19 assists under Neil Lennon.

Are Newcastle good enough for Edouard?

The 22-year-old arrived at Parkhead permanently from French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2018. His £9 million transfer fee was the highest in Celtic’s history.

What do we think?

Edouard was linked with a move to Newcastle earlier this week, though interest in the former PSG man isn’t scarce, as Arsenal and Leicester are also said to be keen on the striker.

Considering the goals he has scored this season for the Hoops, he is a very important player for the club. If Celtic win the league this season, they will be vying for their 10th Premiership title in a row next term. Having Edouard in the team for that will almost certainly help them achieve that feat.

Considering Edouard’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2022, selling him after winning a 10th title in a row would help Celtic in getting the most out of him. With the current interest shown in him, that can help Celtic earn the best deal for their player.
