In his latest Q and A session with Spurs fans for Football.london, Alasdair Gold has discussed the possibility of Spurs signing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud this summer.

The journalist was asked by a Spurs fan whether signing the 33-year-old is still an option this summer after it was suggested last Friday that Frank Lampard’s side would be activating a clause in his contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge for another season. Gold replied, saying (per Football.london):

How well can you remember these Spurs kits? - First up, which season is this from?

“Giroud has had the option taken up to add another year to his existing contract so Chelsea don’t lose him for nothing in the next transfer window and it also covers them in the scenario of the Premier League season continuing past June 30 and the end of his deal.

“I would still expect Tottenham to sniff around Giroud in the next window, with any transfer fee unlikely to be large for a player of his age.

“I also think he fits the bill perfectly at Spurs of being a good foil for Harry Kane – he was superb in the match at Stamford Bridge between the two teams – and will not block the long-term progress of Troy Parrott.”

Would Giroud be a good signing for Spurs this summer?

TIF Tactics:

Considering that Giroud is currently valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt, you imagine that if Spurs are keen on bringing him to North London, they may be willing to pay what would presumably be a relatively small transfer fee. The World Cup winner has struggled for game time so far this season; making just nine appearances in the Premier League; scoring two goals (per WhoScored).

Before the season suspension, Jose Mourinho was forced to adapt his side due to the lack of a fit natural striker in his senior squad, following the long-term injury suffered by Harry Kane. The likes of Lucas Moura, Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn all featured up-front, which perhaps highlights the need to bring in a back-up to Kane in the summer window to ensure that they are not left in that situation again, should the England captain suffer another injury.

Therefore, if Giroud is available for a relatively small fee this summer, then it seems as though he could prove to be a good option in Mourinho’s side.
