With English football currently postponed, Sunderland fans haven’t been able to watch their side play football in a few weeks. Luckily, Sunderland’s official Twitter account rolled back the years and live-tweeted a past match against Chelsea.
The throwback match was from May 7, 2016, when the Black Cats completed a brilliant comeback against the Blues.
Diego Costa opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Wahbi Khazri equalised for Sunderland. Nemanja Matic scored once again for Chelsea in the first-half’s stoppage time, sending Guus Hiddink’s side into the break ahead.
However, Sunderland were resilient, scoring an equalising goal through Fabio Borini just minutes before Jermain Defoe scored the winner.
But, before the match, Sunderland tweeted out a picture of Jan Kirchhoff warming up for the game. The now ex-Sunderland man’s presence on Sunderland’s timeline caused Black Cat supporters to reminisce about the player. It is clear that they would love to see him make a return to the Stadium of Light.

What do we think?
Kirchhoff ended his Sunderland career back in 2017, leaving him without a club before Bolton Wanderers picked him up. Since then he has moved to 1. FC Magdeburg and KFC Uerdingen.
At the age of 29, and a market value of just £495,000, there is still a possibility for Kirchhoff to make the move back to Sunderland at some point. What we do know, though, is that he would be welcomed back with open arms.
