Some Sheffield Wednesday fans have recently taken to Twitter to declare Steven Fletcher the Owls’ ‘player of the year’, for the 2019/20 season.

Alex Miller, who writes about the Owls for the Sheffield Star, recently posted a tweet which started a discussion amongst Wednesday fans about who would be the club’s ‘player of the year’, if the season were to conclude right now. Some Wednesday fans took the opportunity to respond to this tweet with praise for Fletcher.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the 32-year-old attacker has scored a total of 13 goals for the Owls in his 26 appearances thus far during the 2019/20 Championship campaign. This means that the former Scotland international has scored more than twice as many goals as Wednesday’s second-highest Championship goalscorer this term, currently Jacob Murphy, who has scored five league goals for the club this season.

To kick off this quiz about the past week in the Championship, can you name which manager was announced as February's Championship Manager of the Month last week?

What do we think?

Fletcher has earned an average overall rating of 7.25 from his 26 Championship appearances this season according to WhoScored.com. The 32-year-old forward’s average overall rating for the current Championship season is 0.30 higher than Barry Bannan, who is currently Wednesday’s third-highest rated player for the 2019/20 season according to WhoScored.

The only Owls player who has earned a higher average overall rating than Fletcher this season, according to WhoScored, is Lucas Joao who earned a 7.72 average overall rating for Sheffield Wednesday during the 2019/20 season, however, Joao only played a total of 12 minutes for the Owls in the Championship this season before leaving the club to join Reading in August.

It may be fair to say that although Joao may have impressed during his few minutes of Championship game time for the Owls this term, Fletcher has been a bigger asset for the club over the course of the season. Considering his impressive goalscoring record, it may be fair to say that Fletcher’s performances have been a highlight for Wednesday this term.
