Some Charlton Athletic fans have been reacting to a recent post from the club’s official Twitter account which has shared the news that ex-Charlton midfielder Alexei Smertin paid a visit to The Valley “a few weeks ago”.

The club’s tweet, which shares an image of the ex-Charlton midfielder inside his former club’s home ground, states that Smertin’s recent trip to The Valley was his “first time” visiting the Addicks’ stadium “since his loan spell in 2005/06”.

The 44-year-old, who earned a total of 55 caps for the Russian national team during his professional career, joined the Addicks on loan from Chelsea in July 2005. Despite making just 20 appearances for the Addicks, it appears that Smertin may have left a positive impression on some Charlton fans during his brief time with the club based on the tweets above, with one supporter even calling the 44-year-old “one of the best defensive central midfielders” that Charlton have ever had.

Considering that he didn’t spend a large amount of time at the club, it may be fair to say that Charlton Athletic may have also left a positive impression on Smertin, considering that he took the time to pay a visit to his ex-club’s home ground.
