Some Birmingham City fans have been sharing their elation on social media as the club confirm that Maikel Kieftenbeld’s contract has been extended.

The Blues’ official website, in addition to their official Twitter account, recently announced that the club have committed “to a 12-month option” on the 29-year-old midfielder’s deal, which was originally set to expire in the summer. As a result, this news confirms that Kieftenbeld’s Birmingham City contract will now run until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The Dutch midfielder has played a significant role for the Blues since arriving at the club in the summer of 2015. According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, Kieftenbeld has made a total of 166 appearances for Birmingham in all competitions during his five seasons at the club to date.

The 29-year-old made 35 or more Championship appearances in each of his first four seasons with The Blues. However, Kieftenbeld has made just three Championship appearances this season so far, as the midfielder was out of action for a total of 311 days, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, due to a cruciate ligament rupture, which he originally suffered on 7th April 2019.

Some Birmingham City fans have been reacting with joy to the news of Kieftenbeld’s contract extension. Read the positive reactions of some Blues fans to this news in the tweets below.

What do we think?

Prior to the current season, Kieftenbeld featured regularly for the Blues, making a combined total of 162 club appearances during his first four seasons at the club. Considering the important role that the 29-year-old midfielder played in his first four seasons at Birmingham City, it may be understandable for some Blues fans to get excited about this 12-month contract extension, for a player who is currently valued at £720,000, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
