Rangers: Why Caleb Ekuban could be the Rangers target flying under the radar

|

According to Sporx, Rangers are monitoring the availability of Caleb Ekuban. The Ghana international currently plays for Trabzonspor and is valued at £3.6 million, according to Transfermarkt. The centre-forward made the move from Leeds United to Trabzonspor last summer for just £900,000 though.

The report also suggests that Rangers may have some competition in the race to earn the player’s signature, with Italian side Lazio showing interest as well. But is this player worth a potential transfer battle between the two clubs? Let’s take a look.

TIF Tactics – Is Caleb Ekuban worth the hassle?

In 25 appearances for his side this season, Ekuban has scored eight goals. This is a record that sees him find the back of the net every 188 minutes of gameplay, on average, which is roughly equivalent to a goal every other match. This is not a disastrous goal tally by any means but is nowhere close to Alfredo Morelos’ 29 goals in 45 games.

However, given that his side is currently top of the Turkish Super Lig, perhaps there is a case for him to be scoring more regularly. After all, he plays for one of the best teams in his league.

More worryingly, Ekuban’s goal scoring tally in the Super Lig is worse than his overall total. He has scored just three times in his 15 league games, averaging a goal every 263 minutes.

His record in the UEFA Europa League is more promising, however. In five matches, the player has scored four and assisted once. During the competition’s qualifying rounds, he averaged a goal every 90 minutes.

The player has six assists to his name this season as well.

Would you bring Caleb Ekuban to Rangers?

Yes

No

Ekuban’s progress this season could be being overlooked by most Trabzonspor fans though, with Alexander Sorloth scoring 25 goals in just 39 appearances for the side. The Norwegian’s incredible strike rate has earned him suitors from some of the biggest clubs in football, with Real Madrid and Napoli just two of the sides vying for his services.

If Rangers’ interest in Ekuban is true, then they could be on course to pick up a serious bargain buy who is potentially being overlooked because of the success of one of his teammates.
