Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri has revealed that Celtic had not made an approach to sign Jordan Rhodes in the January transfer window.

In a recent interview, Chansiri was talking to Yorkshire Live and one of the topics he did speak about was Rhodes’ situation at the club.

While Celtic were linked with a move for Rhodes, Chansiri revealed that the Hoops had not made any official approach for the striker. He did say that his ‘people‘ informed him about an offer from the Hoops but that piece of information was ‘not true‘.

Chansiri also said that Norwich City wanted to sign Rhodes in the summer of 2019 but the move didn’t materialise.

Not playing enough at Wednesday

This season, Rhodes has scored three times in all competitions for the club. He has played 12 games in the Championship, also playing twice in the League Cup and once in the FA Cup. All three of his goals in the season came against Nottingham Forest, when he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win.

Last season, Rhodes was on loan at Norwich City. During his time at Carrow Road, the striker had made 40 appearances in all competitions. He had scored nine goals, while also picking up one assist under Daniel Farke. Six of those nine goals had come in the Championship.

TIF Tactics

Celtic had signed Patryk Klimala in the January transfer window, while Leigh Griffiths has come back into form by having scored seven goals in 2020 so far. The Scotsman had recently scored a hat-trick for the club against St. Mirren.

It shows that while Rhodes could have added some depth, he might not have played first-team football because of Griffiths being back in goalscoring form. In hindsight, it seems justified why Celtic didn’t move to sign Rhodes in January.
