Tottenham Hotspur reportedly enquired about a possible transfer deal for Barcelona winger Philippe Coutinho.

According to Alasdair Gold in a live Q&A for Football.london (15:47), the North-London club “enquired” about a potential transfer for the Brazilian last summer but the financial side of the deal “didn’t add up” for the club.

A fan asked:

“Is there any possibility of Spurs signing Phillipe Coutinho?”

Gold replied:

“Spurs enquired about Coutinho last summer but the financial side of it didn’t add up for them.

“Pochettino had coached the Brazilian during a loan spell at Espanyol and had got him firing again after a tough start at Inter Milan.

“The Argentine, of course, has now gone and I’m not sure the figures being spoken about lend themselves to a Tottenham move for the former Liverpool man and a second loan move is unlikely to entice Barcelona unless there’s simply no other offers, which would be strange for a player of his quality.”

The 27-year-old is currently on a season-long loan deal at German club Bayern Munich after scoring just 21 goals in 76 appearances for the Spanish club.

So far, Coutinho, who is currently valued at £63 million according to Transfermarkt, has managed to score nine goals and provide eight assists for Bayern in all competitions for the club (per Transfermarkt).

This record has led to Coutinho being awarded a season rating of 7.27/10, making him Bayern’s seventh highest rated player so far this campaign (per WhoScored).

TIF Tactics

If Tottenham were to reignite their interest in the Brazilian and persuade the Spanish club to let him go on a permanent basis, then they would be getting a player that has suitable experience in the Premier League after making 152 appearances for Liverpool in the competition (per Transfermarkt).

According to WhoScored, Coutinho’s player strengths include his passing, dribbling and holding onto the ball.

This would link well with Jose Mourinho’s side whose strengths and styles of play include creating chances through individual skill, creating chances using through balls, attacking through the middle and playing with short passes (per WhoScored).
