In his latest Q and A session with Spurs fans, Alasdair Gold was asked his thoughts on why the deal for Paulo Dybala fell through in the summer.

In his article for Football.London, Gold replied to a question asking if the signing of Jack Clarke from Leeds United meant that the North London club were unable to get the deal for the Juventus ace over the line. He replied, suggesting it wasn’t so much about the money in that case, saying: “with Dybala, it was the mess of those image rights which caused chaos in the final weeks of the window.” per Football.London live blog (16:57)

The Argentine international looked to be on the brink of a move to the Premier League last summer, but as Gold suggests, it was the player’s image rights that scuppered the chances of a deal. Since then, the 26-year-old has performed superbly in Maurizio Sarri’s side; having averaged an impressive 7.37 rating for his performances in Serie A.

The North London club subsequently signed Giovani Lo Celso on loan from Real Betis, before making the move permanent in the January transfer window. Although the 23-year-old’s performances in the Champions League; where he has averaged a 7.31 rating, suggest that he was a quality buy, he is yet to score or assist in the Premier League.

Dybala meanwhile, has contributed 13 goals in all competitions for Juventus so far this season and having him in the squad, especially in the absence of the injured Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, would surely have been a huge boost for the North London club.

It no doubt comes as some frustration to some Spurs fans therefore that they were unable to get the deal done due to Dybala’s image rights and considering his form this season, it would be a surprise to see them get close to his signature again anytime soon.
