Some Southampton fans have been talking about Alex McCarthy after a video of the club’s goalkeeper was posted online.
The Saints were recently at the receiving end of a Premier League defeat at the hands of Newcastle United, as Allan Saint-Maximin scored the decisive goal for the Magpies.
The Saints Twitter account posted a video from the game recently which showed some of McCarthy’s heroics from the clash.
Is McCarthy the most underrated Premier League goalkeeper?
Of course he is
I don't think so
McCarthy’s tremendous triple-save denied Newcastle the chance to take the lead during their slender defeat at St. Mary’s on Saturday – this is how Saints fans reacted to the video:
The 5 flat footed defenders certainly gave it up

Stunning goalkeeping. That’s commitment!

Best I’ve ever seen him – deserved a clean sheet.

Step up Jan Valery ?

And one stupid lapse costs us. Got to feel for McCarthy

Like our defence gave up and left it all to @Alex_Macca23 to sort out

As per Whoscored, McCarthy was the best performer on the pitch at the weekend by picking up a match rating of 8.77. The 30-year-old made as many as six saves, including a superb penalty stop from Matt Ritchie.
What do we think?
It was Yan Valery’s error that led to the goal against Newcastle as the Frenchman got a match rating of just 5.93. It shows that McCarthy had nothing to do with the goal going in and Southampton losing. As some fans rightly point out in the comments, the defence did let the goalkeeper down in this case.
