In a recent Q&A on Chronicle Live, Lee Ryder, the Chronicle’s chief Newcastle writer, has been discussing where he believes the Magpies will look to strengthen over the upcoming summer transfer window.

Following last summer’s transfer business, in which Newcastle signed Joelinton for £39.6 million, Allan Saint-Maximin for £16.2 million and Emil Krafth for £4.86 million, as well as Andy Carroll on a free transfer, Lee Ryder believes that there will be an extra emphasis placed on recruitment this summer.

This is largely down to the unimpressive performances of their most expensive signing last season, Joelinton, who has scored just one goal for the club in 29 Premier League appearances since joining from Hoffenheim.

In response to the question: “Who do you think Newcastle will buy in the transfer window?” Ryder stated:

“I think the scouting staff have been told to look for a winger and a striker. Steve Bruce also wanted extra energy in midfield. They have looked at a range of players in Serie A, the Bundesliga and France.”

“I know that Newcastle have looked at Hakan Calhanoglu at AC Milan extensively this season. But like everything else, suddenly it feels like everything is in the air and getting the season over and done with seems at the forefront of people’s minds in all countries.”

Ryder also stated that he felt Steve Bruce would have a much greater input into the club’s targets this summer, having only been appointed as Newcastle manager in mid-July last year.

According to Ryder’s comments, then, it would appear that Newcastle will primarily be on the hunt for a new striker and winger this summer, which is likely not good news for Joelinton.
