What do we think?
This 5-0 win from 20 October 1996 put the Magpies three points clear of second-placed Arsenal on the 1996/97 Premier League table at the time. Additionally, this win created a five-point gap between Newcastle United and Manchester United, who would ultimately go on to stage a comeback and claim the 1996/97 Premier League title, despite this heavy October defeat at St.James’ Park.
While they didn’t go on to lift the 1996/97 Premier League trophy, this classic win may provide at least one positive memory from this campaign, in which the Magpies went on to finish in second place. With that in mind, it may be understandable why some Magpies fans have been buzzing in response to the news that their club plans to show this classic match in full at the weekend.
