Luke Edwards has confirmed that the report that fellow Telegraph writers Jason Burt and Sam Wallace produced on Sunday about a potential Newcastle takeover is ‘100% correct‘.

This follows on from two positive updates released on Monday by The Athletic’s George Caulkin and a joint piece from Martin Hardy and Matt Lawton in The Times.

Who is Newcastle's top goalscorer in the league?

This has led to Edwards weighing into the discussion, and he claims that there are two versions of the same story contradicting each other, and he called on Mike Ashley to come out and clarify the situation.

However, Edwards also confirmed that the Premier League has received paperwork from the potential buyers of the Toon and that Burt and Wallace’s initial piece published on Sunday is accurate.

What do we think?

This takeover situation is moving along quite quickly now, and this update from Edwards does clarify the initial piece published in The Telegraph.

In a very short space of time, Caulkin, Hardy, Lawton and Edwards have all provided takeover updates, with some more positive than others.

However, what is clear is that the Premier League have received paperwork from the buying side, while The Times has suggested that Newcastle have also done the same.

The report in The Athletic produced by Caulkin claims that Ashley wants to sell and might accept a lower fee.

Of course, every takeover attempt that has happened previously while Ashley has owned the Toon has failed – so we still urge caution.

However, there does seem to be something happening, and it will be interesting to see where this new information goes.

Could Ashley finally be replaced as Newcastle’s owner?

For the sake of the Toon’s fans, we hope so.
