A lot of Newcastle United fans have replied to a tweet from the Evening Chronicle asking them if they think their club made a mistake by not keeping Ivan Toney.

What was the score on the 29th of February between Newcastle and Burnley?

The 23-year-old, who is valued at £450k by Transfermarkt, has scored 26 goals this season and has been linked with a move to the Premier League – with the likes of Burnley and Bournemouth said to be interested in securing Toney’s services.

The question was posed to these Toon fans after Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson claimed that Toney could be better than Dwight Gayle – or any striker he has managed.

This has drawn a mixed reaction from these Toon fans – with many thinking that they did make a mistake in letting the 23-year-old go.

Other Newcastle supporters, though, do not think they made a mistake.

What do we think?

Newcastle sold Toney to Peterborough in 2018 for £650k, but they did not include a buy-back clause – which could have been a mistake.

Did Newcastle make a mistake with Toney?

No

Toney has blown League One away this year, and if Peterborough don’t get promoted, then he could be away, and we would not be surprised to see him in the Premier League – if those sides that were linked with him are still interested.

If that does happen then, the Toon might find Toney scoring goals against them rather than for them.
