Some Everton fans have been reacting to a tweet posted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin following this past Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Everton and Manchester United.

Sunday’s Premier League clash between Everton and Manchester United ended in controversy as Calvert-Lewin had a stoppage-time goal ruled out following a VAR check that came to the decision that Calvert-Lewin’s teammate Gylfi Sigurdsson “interfered with play” from an offside position.

The 22-year-old’s late winner would have been his second goal of the game, adding to his third-minute opener. Sky Sports reported that the Everton attacker vocally disagreed with the decision to rule out his late goal, “when shown the goal immediately after the game”, stating that the 22-year-old claimed that the decision was “a disaster”.

Calvert-Lewin followed up on his post-match reaction by posting a tweet after the game which may have been poking fun at the controversial situation. The 22-year-old sent out a message via his Twitter account stating “that’s the goal of the season award wrapped up then”.

The centre-forward’s tweet prompted some Everton fans to share their view that the 22-year-old was “robbed” of his second goal in Sunday’s game. Read the reactions of some Everton fans to Calvert-Lewin’s post in the tweets below.

What do we think?

According to thefa.com, a player is “penalised on becoming involved in active play by making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”.

While it may be fair to say, as Calvert-Lewin did in his post-match interview, that “the keeper is never going to save the ball” following the deflection it took from Harry Maguire, regardless of Sigurdsson’s involvement, it may also be fair to say that Sigurdsson did become involved in active play when, in an offside position, he had to move his legs out of the way of Calvert-Lewin’s strike in order for it to find its way into the net.

It may be arguable that Sigurdsson’s involvement in the goal influenced the Manchester United goalkeeper’s ability to save the shot. As a result, it may be understandable why the goal was ultimately ruled out.
