Sheffield Wednesday defender Matt Penney is currently out on loan to Bundesliga 2 side FC St. Pauli. The 22-year-old joined the German outfit in August 2019 and is scheduled to remain at the club until the end of the season (via Transfermarkt.co.uk).
Penney has come through the ranks at Hillsborough and has had loan spells at Bradford City and Mansfield Town prior to this one, but the left-back has been in the headlines recently after his excellent goal versus Hamburg at the weekend. His ferocious strike from outside of the penalty area found its way into the bottom corner and helped his side earn three points against their local rivals.
Would you like to see Matt Penney recalled?
Yes
No
Following footage of his wonderful strike being shared by the Owls’ official Twitter account, some fans have begun questioning why he wasn’t recalled in January, whilst others praised his contribution at the weekend.
Recall him and start him immediately. Star boy

Not sure why we didn’t recall him in Jan, given we only have one semi fit LB!

Have the bad feeling we’ll not see him in a Wednesday shirt again, they can get him for free, hopefully he’ll sign a new contract with us.

What do we think?
Matt Penney has only ever made 17 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, therefore, despite his impressive contribution last weekend, we’re unsure whether or not bringing him back to Hillsborough in January would have been on the minds of those at the club. The Owls are without a win in their last seven Championship games and in our opinion, their problems run a lot deeper than just one player.
