Some Birmingham City fans have been joyfully reminiscing over their successful 2010/11 League Cup campaign, which saw the Blues earn their “first major silverware since 1963”.

Birmingham City’s official Twitter account recently posted footage of Obafemi Martins’ 89th minute winning goal that sealed a 2-1 victory for the Blues in the 2010/11 League Cup final, to commemorate the nine-year anniversary of their historic win.

The footage shows Martins opportunistically capitalising on a mix-up in the defence for the Blues’ opponents Arsenal, following a long-ball forward from Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster, who transfermarkt.co.uk credit with making the assist for the cup final winning goal.

Birmingham City had failed to beat Arsenal in each of their previous eight meetings going into the 2010/11 League Cup final. However, the Blues evidently saved the upset win for the big occasion as Martins’ late goal secured the win and the silverware.

Some Blues fans have been reacting positively to the footage on social media, sharing their positive memories of the ‘unbelievable moment’ in the club’s recent history. Read the posts of some Birmingham City fans reminiscing over their 2010/11 League Cup win in the tweets below.

What do we think?

While their League Cup victory, which ended a 48-year drought of Silverware for the Blues, marks a high point for many Birmingham City fans, the Blues also felt the lowest of lows later on that same season, suffering relegation from the Premier League.

The 2010/11 season may spark a variety of mixed emotions for Birmingham City supporters. However, the elation felt by achieving the rare accomplishment of earning their first piece of silverware since 1963 may outweigh the negative feelings associated with suffering relegation from the top-flight in the hearts and minds of many Blues supporters.
