The future of Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson is very uncertain as he is said to be edging closer to a Hillsborough exit in the summer.

Dom Howson from the Sheffield Star has reported on Tuesday morning that the midfielder is highly unlikely to be involved for the club in their Championship game against Barnsley on Saturday.

The report goes on to hint that his omission from the squad against Millwall this past weekend was a sign that Hutchinson’s future lies away from the club.

The 30-year-old’s current deal at the club runs out in the summer of 2020 and hopes of him staying are looking ‘increasingly precarious‘.

A respected figure at Hillsborough

Wednesday signed Hutchinson from Chelsea on a permanent basis in the summer of 2014, after he was released by his former club from Stamford Bridge. He had spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Wednesday, playing ten games in the Championship for them.

So far this season, Hutchinson has made 23 appearances in the Championship for the club. He has racked up a tally of one goal and one assist, also assisting once in the FA Cup for the Owls.

Since joining the club in 2014, Hutchinson has made 154 appearances in all competitions for Wednesday, scoring six times and racking up a tally of four assists as well.

TIF Tactics

At the age of 30, Hutchinson, who is valued at £1.8million (as per Transfermarkt), still has a place in the first team and the number of times he has played shows that. While the club may not be playing him in recent days, as Howson points out, he could still do a job for the side in the next few years.

Wednesday could hand him a new contract and the younger players can learn from the experience he has under his belt.
