Spurs fans have been reacting to the news that Inter are reportedly interested in signing Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Wednesday’s print edition of Corriere Dello Sport per Calcio Mercato (via Hotspur Related) suggests that Antonio Conte’s side are interested in signing the Belgian centre-back this summer when his current contract expires. The former Ajax man originally signed for Spurs in 2012 and has gone on to make 308 appearances for the North London club.
The 32-year-old was once renowned as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League; earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances in the 2017/18 season. However, it seems as if this season his performances have begun to decline, with the experienced defender averaging a disappointing 6.80 rating in all competitions.
Should Spurs offer Vertonghen a new contract?

It’s probably for the best. We have to bring in young fresh blood through or invest.

We’re setting up an international Tottenham B team. Whatever they win we can claim, sweet!

One fan even suggested that former Spurs man Christian Eriksen will be over the moon, which is rather sarcastic, as there were claims that the Danish midfielder gave Vertonghen a black eye during his time in North London.
Bet Erickson will be over the moon

These Spurs fans seem to agree that Vertonghen is past his best and now is the right time for him to move on.
What do we think?
Although he is 32-years-old, Vertonghen has made 23 appearances for Spurs this season, which suggests that he could still be useful as a back-up option. However, he looks to have lost his place to Japhet Tanganga in recent weeks, so perhaps a move to Inter is for the best.
