Spurs fans were delighted to hear some quotes from Japhet Tanganga about his start at Spurs this week.

The 20-year-old defender, who has established himself as a regular in Jose Mourinho’s side of late, spoke to the club about his first few senior appearances for Spurs. In an interview posted on the official club website, before being tweeted out by the club this week, the versatile defender discussed his mental state in the recent fixtures, saying: “I thought maybe if I was playing on this stage I would have got nervous but I feel like I’ve been really calm. I haven’t been fazed by the opponents or the circumstances. I know what my game is.”

The Spurs academy graduate has impressed in his three games in the Premier League so far this season, averaging a superb 7.44 rating, despite featuring against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool. Since his introduction to the first-team, Mourinho’s side have kept two clean sheets, which has doubled their tally for the season, so the youngster is clearly having a strong influence.

Has Tanganga been Spurs' best player so far this calendar year?

Reaction from Spurs fans to Tanganga’s quotes can be seen in the tweets below, with one even referencing Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane. The Portuguese manager was reacting sarcastically to a question he was posed regarding the criticism to his perceived handling of young players and remarked (per Manchester Evening News): “Raphael Varane is one of the best players in the world, yes, it’s fair criticism.”

These Spurs fans are clearly delighted with Tanganga’s quotes and the start he has made to his Lilywhites career.

What do we think?

Tanganga has shown great maturity and versatility in his limited appearances so far, featuring across the defence and producing superb displays, most notably perhaps in the win over Manchester City.
