Spurs fans were relieved to hear that Giovani Lo Celso cannot be retrospectively banned despite VAR admitting that he should have been sent off during the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.

According to journalist Rob Harris (via Daily Hotspur), the Argentinian midfielder will not face a ban, even though VAR suggested that their original decision not to send him off was the wrong one. The incident was reviewed after the former Real Betis man appeared to stamp on Cesar Azpilicueta but thankfully for Spurs fans and Jose Mourinho, the 23-year-old was allowed to stay on the pitch and as a result, will be available for upcoming games.

Lo Celso was one of few bright sparks in the Spurs side at the weekend, earning a 7.62 rating for his performance (as per WhoScored) but was clearly fortunate to last the full 90 minutes against Frank Lampard’s side. The Argentinian international has been in excellent form of late, so Mourinho will no doubt be relieved that he cannot be retrospectively banned.

Reaction from Spurs fans to the latest news on Lo Celso can be seen in the tweets below.

Some of these Spurs fans were clearly relieved to hear the news on Lo Celso, whilst others discussed the inconsistency of VAR.

What do we think?

It is strange that VAR even admitted to making the wrong decision, as the midfielder wasn’t sent off in the game and now can’t be banned, so it has no real influence. However, it can only be good news for the North London club that the in-form midfielder remains available for their upcoming fixtures.
