Spurs fans were delighted with Toby Alderweireld’s quotes on Steven Bergwijn following the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
The defender spoke to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, per Goal (via Ricky Sacks) about his new team-mate, saying: “I was particularly impressed by his professionalism. Steven has a good head on him. We have a very positive group. If you behave normally, you belong immediately.” The 22-year-old joined Spurs during the January transfer window from PSV and marked his debut with an impressive goal against Manchester City.
A lot of Spurs fans believe that Alderweireld is taking a shot at Danny Rose, who left Spurs on loan during the transfer window and had been accused of being a disruptive influence during his time at the North London club.
Do you think Alderweireld was talking about Rose?
Yes
No
Reaction from Spurs fans to Alderweireld’s quotes on Bergwijn can be seen in the tweets below.
It’s as if getting rid of toxic people like Eriksen and Rose somehow galvanised the team.. should have been done in the summer, we would probably be sitting nearer 3rd than 4th

Why isn’t Toby our captain? A perfect fit.

These Spurs fans clearly enjoyed Alderweireld’s comments and seem convinced that he was ‘taking a dig’ at Rose.
What do we think?
Bergwijn has made a great start at Spurs and Alderweireld’s comments do seem to suggest that there were some characters within the dressing room at the club that needed to be moved on.
