Spurs could be set to offer a contract to former Southend United keeper Ted Smith, who was reportedly on trial with the North London club at the beginning of the season.

According to Echo Sport, the League One side are interested in offering Smith a contract, but face stiff competition from the Premier League club. Southend lost first-choice keeper Nathan Bishop to Manchester United during the transfer window, so they are keen to bring Smith back to the club – but are concerned that Spurs could yet make an offer for the shot-stopper.

Spurs have recently welcomed club captain Hugo Lloris back from injury and have Paulo Gazzaniga and Michel Vorm as back-ups to the French international. However, with Vorm’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, Smith could represent a cheaper option as a third-choice keeper.

If the reports are true and Smith was on trial with Spurs then it would perhaps not be a surprise to see them offer him a contract. However, with Southend scrambling to sign a keeper and the 24-year-old currently training with Sol Campbell’s side, then perhaps the League One club are favourites to secure his signature.

Smith has made just 30 first-team appearances in his career and has no experience of playing the Premier League, so it would perhaps be a strange signing if he were to join the North London club. However, with other Premier League clubs boasting third-choice keepers such as Scott Carson and Andy Lonergan, perhaps Smith could join up with Jose Mourinho’s side.
