Some Tottenham fans have shared their excitement at speculation over the club’s interest in signing goalkeeper Dean Henderson, which have emerged in the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old Manchester United man is currently plying his trade on loan at Sheffield United, where he has started 25 of the Blades’ 26 Premier League games this season. Henderson’s performances with Sheffield United have been impressive enough that some have called for England manager Gareth Southgate to consider making him England’s number one at Euro 2020.

Henderson has stood between the sticks for a Sheffield United defence that have conceded the second-fewest amount of goals in the Premier League so far this season. His contributions have helped the Blades to their impressive current league position of fifth place in the Premier League table – higher than potential suitors Tottenham – who sit in sixth and currently trail Sheffield United by two points.

At present, no Premier League goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets than Dean Henderson has with Sheffield United this season. His nine clean sheets put him on a par with Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, Burnley’s Nick Pope and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel in that respect.

What do we think?

At just 22 years old, Henderson’s goalkeeping performances this season have been impressive. However, it’s arguable that he would not yet be ready to oust long-term Tottenham number one, Hugo Lloris.

Despite battling injury issues this season, club captain Hugo Lloris remains one of the Premier League’s top performers between the sticks. In the nine Premier League games Lloris has featured in this season, Whoscored.com have given him an average rating of 7.02, which currently ranks as the second-highest average rating for a Premier League goalkeeper in the 2019/20 campaign.

Furthermore, the willingness of Henderson’s parent club Manchester United to sell the 22-year-old to a domestic rival may also hinder any potential Spurs move for the player. Long-time Red Devils number one David de Gea has shown inconsistencies throughout the season which may call his position into question, with Henderson waiting in the wings to take his place.
