Some Southampton fans have made it clear that they will be delighted if Shane Long signs a new contract at St. Mary’s.
Tom Barclay from the Sun recently reported through his Twitter account that the striker is currently in talks with Southampton to extend his deal at the club. He also went on to say that the contract in question is expected to be an extension of two years with his current deal expiring in the summer.
Does Shane Long deserve the new contract?
He surely deserves it
He should leave
On hearing this piece of news, many Southampton fans were delighted. They feel the former Hull City man deserves a new deal.
Must admit if you’ve asked me at the start of the season.. I would never had said give Shane Long a new deal but to be fair to him he’s been good since the revival of the team.
Deserves the new contract imo. #SaintsFC

If you’d have told me i’d say this a year ago i’d have laughed in your face… extending Shane Long’s contract by a year is the correct decision #saintsfc

100% would be offering Shane long a new contract. Does so much for the team and a huge part of why Ings has been banging in the goals I believe. Ingsy has said he likes playing with him. #SaintsFC

Long is a weird one, doesn’t really score but does put in a hell of shift! I’m all for him getting a new contract #SaintsFC

All I want in life is a Shane Long lifetime contract at #saintsfc just so we can all make “Long time” jokes

Personally I think this is excellent news! Long is now a key player in Ralph’s strategy! #SaintsFC https://t.co/AZmAoMgTKJ via @Football Insider

So far this season, Long has made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Saints. He has racked up a tally of just two goals and four assists. Although, the two goals that he has scored have come against teams that are currently above Southampton in the table in Spurs and Wolves.
What do we think?
While he maybe 33, Long adds a lot of experience and depth to the Saints side. His numbers show that he isn’t the most prolific goalscorer, but the fact that he scores against arguably better sides shows his value.
