Liverpool fans have been left outraged after comments made by Atletico Madrid chairman Enrique Cerezo surfaced on Twitter, in which the Spaniard discusses the condition of Anfield.

Atletico will travel to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League tie, having narrowly defeated the reigning European champions 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

Diego Simeone credited the win to the Atletico fans, who created an electric atmosphere within the Metropolitano.

However, in his post-match comments, Enrique Cerezo turned his attention towards the venue of the second leg of Atletico’s tie, stating: “Anfield is great but also an old stadium. It would not pass the technical inspections if they had to go through them.”

This left the Reds fanbase enraged, with many warning that Cerezo’s comments will do nothing but fuel the Liverpool team as well as the Anfield crowd on during the return fixture in March.

What do we think?

Cerezo would be wise not to stoke the Liverpool fans’ fire further ahead of the second leg, with the stadium already famous for producing extremely hostile atmospheres during Champions League matches.

A prime example would be the last time a La Liga club travelled to Anfield with a first-leg lead, Liverpool arguably produced one of the most extraordinary comebacks in the history of the competition against Barcelona. With these factors in mind, Liverpool fans will certainly believe that Cerezo should keep his opinions to himself until the tie is finished.
