Some Birmingham City fans have reacted negatively to manager Pep Clotet’s recent call for the Championship to introduce VAR, following their midweek draw with Millwall.

Clotet claimed that his Birmingham City side would be “much higher up the table” than they currently are if the Championship had VAR this season, in his recent pre-match press conference ahead of the Blues’ upcoming Championship game versus QPR.

The manager’s comments come after Birmingham’s 0-0 draw with Millwall this past Thursday, in which his side had a goal “controversially disallowed”. Had the Blues earned all three points from Thursday’s game, they would have jumped up to 13th place in the Championship table, putting themselves level on points with 12th placed Sheffield Wednesday.

While some Blues supporters may share Pep’s feelings of injustice coming off of Thursday’s game, many Birmingham City fans disagreed with the 42-year-old’s VAR comments. Read the reactions of some Birmingham fans to Clotet’s recent VAR comments in the tweets below.

What do we think?

It may not come as a surprise to many that Clotet’s pro-VAR comments have gone down poorly with a large chunk of Birmingham City supporters, despite the controversy surrounding their recent draw with Millwall. VAR has been quite a controversial topic in English football this season given the “chaos” it has caused in some instances in the Premier League this season.

While Clotet’s comments were pro-VAR, the Spaniard admitted that he is aware of the “disruption” that it can cause, that many fans have cited as a big negative to the system. VAR may be a potentially useful tool, however, until it’s implemented in a more universally accepted way than it has been in England this season, it may be understandable why some fans would be unhappy to see it introduced to the Championship.
