Sunderland marched to victory against Wycombe Wanderers this weekend, putting four goals past the side who were, at the time, top of the table. The loss dropped Wycombe down to second but pushed the Mackems up into a playoff spot. It provides Phil Parkinson with a real platform to build off as he heads into the second half of the season with this ‘inform‘ Black Cats team.

If it wasn’t for Chris Maguire, however, the match would have been just a 2-0 win. The player scored a brace during the match. While his first goal was a penalty, his 78th-minute freekick was a thing of beauty.

After the match, Sky Bet League One posted a video of the goal. They claimed it was the goal of the game. Many Sunderland fans suggested that Denver Humes’ team goal was much better. Maguire’s bar down freekick was a close second though.

Others thought Maguire has been playing brilliantly recently. The player has scored four goals and registered two assists in his last four games.

What do we think?

Maguire will be an important player for Parkinson in the second half of the season. He has shown in recent weeks why the manager kept faith in him after he called the player ‘unprofessional’ during the club’s McDonald-gate incident. It appears as though the pair have gotten past the incident, however, as they look to secure promotion to the Championship by the end of the season.
