According to a report from The Athletic, Leeds United are on the trail of RB Leipzig’s Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is reported to be an admirer of Jean-Kevin Augustin, who has a Transfermarkt value of £12.60m.

It’s believed that Leeds United will attempt to move for Augustin if Monaco cut short his season-long loan in France before next Friday’s deadline.

Any potential move is dependant on the condition of AS Monaco allowing the Frenchman to return back to the German giants RB Leipzig, which does put some serious question marks over the likelihood of Marcelo Bielsa getting his man.

Once again Bielsa looks set for a fight if he is to nail his target, with AS Monaco reluctant to allow Augustin to return back to RB Leipzig, which is said to be the what any formal offer is dependant on.

Leeds has had three offers for their other target Che Adams rejected, despite one of them including a £20m buy option should the Peacocks gain promotion to the Premier League this season (BBC Sport).

Who is Jean-Kevin Augustin?

In July 2009, Jean-Kevin Augustin made a huge leap in his young career when joining Paris Saint-Germain from a small French side called AC Boulogne Billancourt on a free transfer to PSG’s U17s (Transfermarkt).

From that point onwards, Augustin would continue to make his way up the French giant’s ranks, coming up all the way from the U17s to starting and scoring in the league for PSG’s senior side (Transfermarkt).

However, in July 2017, the now 22-year-old would make the giant leap to the German Bundesliga when signing for current club RB Leipzig.

Leipzig paid £14.40m for the Frenchman, but life in the Bundesliga never really clicked for Augustin, which then led to the German side loaning him out to AS Monaco back in France (Transfermarkt).

It’s Monaco who is said to be the ones reluctant to let the striker go back to Germany, which would then leave talks and offers open to Leeds United.

Verdict

This seems like a very tough deal for Leeds to try and pull off, but luckily for them, it seems from the report RB Leipzig is open to talks, however, convincing AS Monaco looks to be the difficult part.
