Leeds: Phil Hay on Bowen

Phil Hay does not believe that Leeds United will be making a move for Jarrod Bowen because Hull City do not want to entertain a deal that the Whites could afford.

The Athletic reporter knows that Leeds like Bowen but that the only way the Whites could get him would be to go for a loan with an obligation to buy, and Hull are not keen on that idea.

However, Grant McCann has recently stated that he could be sold if a new deal isn’t agreed.

Why do Leeds want Bowen?

The 23-year-old has scored 54 goals in all competitions in the past three seasons, including 17 this season, and he is not even a striker – it is pretty clear why the Whites would want him in their side.

Bowen stands out as arguably one of the best players in the Championship – if Leeds could add him to their squad, then their goalscoring worries could be over.

However, the main problems stopping Leeds signing Bowen is their financial situation and interest from Premier League clubs.

The Whites are restricted by Financial Fair Play and have to be clever in the transfer market – that is why they signed Helder Costa on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy this summer.

Hull have made it clear that if they are to sell Bowen, then they want the cash up front (17:25), and Leeds cannot do that.

Another issue is the fact that half of the Premier League have registered an interest in taking Bowen to their respective clubs, but none of them have matched Hull’s price tag yet.

The 23-year-old could be an excellent signing for Leeds, but it is unlikely they will be able to bring him to Elland Road this window.
