This week Jordan Campbell from The Athletic claimed that Rangers are not interested in signing Josh Windass from Wigan Athletic. The central midfielder made the move from Ibrox to Wigan in the summer of 2018 for around £1.98 million

During his time with the club, Windass split opinion among supporters. Some thought he was young and raw, and therefore excused his inconsistencies, while others saw him as a player who picked and chose when he wanted to show up. Windass has admitted in the past that he misses Ibrox, so a move back to Rangers has always been a possibility. But is Windass the kind of player that Rangers would need right now?

The midfielder has played in 16 games so far this season, netting four goals in the process. But the midfielder is yet to record an assist in competitive play in 2019/2020, which would be a worrying sign for Rangers fans if the player did make the move.

Would you welcome Josh Windass back to Rangers?

No

Rangers’ top assisters are left-back Borna Barisic with 14 assists, right-back James Tavernier with 12 assists and striker Alfredo Morelos with nine assists. The side is crying out for a central midfielder who can start providing from the middle of the park as well. But it is evident, from his statistics, that Windass is nowhere close to being a provider from his central position. In his 251 career appearances, he has only registered 30 assists. He has 51 goals in that time as well, making him more of a goal-scoring midfielder than an assister.

With the window closing down, any move for Windass would have to be made quickly. But according to Campbell, the club isn’t even interested. Rangers fans can go about their day in full confidence that this move isn’t going to happen. Hopefully Rangers fans will have something a little more concrete regarding transfer rumours by the end of the week.
