Some Tottenham Hotspur fans are urging the club to make a move to sign Napoli star Dries Mertens on deadline day.
Spurs now seem set to miss out on signing Olivier Giroud with journalist Fabrizio Romano having confirmed that Chelsea will keep the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge till the deadline day ends. The journalist also quoted Frank Lampard as saying that the club will not sign Mertens this month.
Would Mertens have made sense for Tottenham?
No, doesn't fit the profile
He would have been fantastic
Many Spurs fans have now made it a point to urge their club to sign Mertens himself. They made their opinions clear on Twitter.

Why arent we over this ?
We are basically relying on Chelsea to get this guy for us to get their year 3rd choice ST— SpursSignSomeoneInJanuary (@SpursTransfer10) January 30, 2020
#TransferTalk Spurs should make a move for Mertens.. they’ll either get a striker… or make Chelsea a lot more likely to sell Giroud.

Why are we not going for Mertens? Come on spurs, do something!

Shouldn’t we be all over Dries Mertens?

Why don’t we just take Chelsea out of this equation, leave them with Giroud and we go and get Mertens.

So far this season, Mertens has made 22 appearances in all competitions for Napoli. He has found the back of the net nine times, racking up four assists. In the Champions League, the Belgian has played six games, scoring five times and assisting once.
Mertens, who is valued at £22.5 million (as per Transfermarkt), was impressive for the Partenopei last season too, playing 47 games in all competitions. He had a tally of 19 goals and got 12 assists for the club under Carlo Ancelotti.
Mertens is currently Napoli’s second-highest goalscorer in club history. He has scored 118 goals in total- more than Diego Maradona, but less than Marek Hamsik.
What do we think?
Considering Mertens’ current deal at the Stadio San Paolo runs out in the summer of 2020, he could be a very cheap option for Spurs. He is experienced and scores goals- something Jose Mourinho can find handy at Tottenham.
