Spurs fans are confident that Jose Mourinho was making a plea to chairman Daniel Levy in his comments following the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Sunday.

According to Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick on Twitter, Mourinho was keen to emphasise that Spurs played “without a striker” in their FA Cup clash, saying: “The boys did what they can, you cannot transform Lucas or Son into a No.9 like Harry Kane.” Spurs are, of course, without Harry Kane, after the England striker suffered a hamstring tear in the defeat by Southampton on New Year’s Day.

Spurs fans are convinced this is Mourinho’s way of making it clear to Daniel Levy that Spurs need a striker during this month’s transfer window, with 17-year-old Troy Parrott the only other natural striker in the senior set-up as it stands. Spurs deployed winger Heung-Min Son upfront in the draw with Middlesbrough and the South Korean struggled to have any real influence on the game.

Do you think Mourinho will bring in a back-up striker in January?

Reaction from Spurs fans to Mourinho’s post-match comments can be seen in the tweets below.

These Spurs fans clearly feel that Mourinho was making a plea to Levy and want to see the club sign a striker in the January window.

What do we think?

Fernando Llorente last season showed the importance of having a back-up striker to Harry Kane, as the Spaniard was vital to Spurs making the Champions League final; scoring the all-important goal in the quarter-final tie with Manchester City. Spurs really need to bring in a striker in this month’s window if they are to push on whilst also getting the best out of Son and Lucas Moura.
