Spurs fans were devastated to hear this week that both Moussa Sissoko and Harry Kane are expected to miss the next six weeks through injury.

According to Duncan Castles on Reach Plc’s Transfer Window podcast (via Daily Hotspur), both will spend around six weeks on the sidelines after suffering injuries in the New Year’s Day defeat at Southampton.

Here’s what he had to say (as per Daily Star):

“As well as seeing some of the problems with the squad, I talked to someone close to Mourinho last night and he was commenting and saying it’s unbelievable that Tottenham managed to build a squad for this season where they did not have a backup to Harry Kane, their most important player in the squad, particularly as we know Harry Kane is injury prone.

“They’ve now got themselves in a situation where Kane will be out I’m told that the prognosis on that injury is that it’s a six-week hamstring injury.

“They’ve also lost Sissoko and they believe that’s expected to be another six-week injury so potentially they now have eight games including return fixture at Chelsea, their opening Champions League knockout round game against Leipzig, which is a tie that Mourinho did not want to draw.”

It comes as a huge blow to Jose Mourinho, who remains without a natural back-up striker to Kane, suggesting that he may have to bring in an experienced man to fill the Englishman’s boots until he returns to action.

It comes as little surprise that Spurs’ talisman Kane is out injured, with the club extremely reliant on him throughout the busy festive period, where he played 90 minutes of every game until his untimely exit at St Mary’s. The 26-year-old has been in excellent form so far this season for Mourinho’s side; scoring 17 goals for Spurs and averaging an impressive 7.42 rating. This begs the question, where will Spurs’ goals come from in the absence of the England international?

Sissoko meanwhile, joins an ever-growing injury list and lessens Spurs’ options in midfield even further, with fellow Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele also expected to miss some games.

Do Spurs need to sign a striker and midfielder in January?

Reaction from Spurs fans to the injury updates on Kane and Sissoko can be seen in the tweets below.

These Spurs fans are clearly devastated with the injury update, with some fans ready to write off the season already.

What do we think?

Spurs desperately need to sign a back-up striker in the January window, rather than playing Lucas Moura or Heung-Min Son out of position. Even when Kane returns, to ask him to play 90 minutes of every single game seems drastic, so it seems necessary for them to sign a new one. With Ndombele, Sissoko and potentially Winks all out injured, it would be a surprise if Mourinho didn’t bring at least one midfielder in during this month’s window.
