Spurs fans were delighted to hear that reported transfer target Edinson Cavani is now unlikely to stay with Paris Saint Germain beyond this transfer window.

According to GFFN, (via Ricky Sacks), PSG boss Thomas Tuchel revealed that the Uruguayan could leave the French side this month, saying: “I am not sure that Edinson Cavani will be here in February.” Spurs have been linked with a move for the experienced striker in recent weeks, as they look to bring in a replacement for the injured Harry Kane.

The 32-year-old has struggled for game time for the French champions so far this season; having made just four starts in Ligue 1, so it is no surprise to hear that he has now reportedly handed in a transfer request. The former Napoli man has a sensational scoring record for PSG; having scored 198 goals for them since making the move from Italy in 2013.

Should Spurs try and sign Cavani this month?

Reaction from Spurs fans to the latest on Cavani can be seen in the tweets below, with one fan suggesting Cavani has a ‘Diego Costa-like attitude’. Jose Mourinho signed the aforementioned Spain international as a Didier Drogba replacement when he was the manager of Chelsea, with both men thought to have been on his radar at the time (per FourFourTwo).

Interestingly, the same article stated in 2014: “Both strikers are exceptional on the counter-attack and used to working under strict tactical instructions, which are the assets that Mourinho desires the most. Their awareness of team-mates, drive with the ball and finishing capacity makes them perfect Mourinho-style forwards.”

So, with comparisons being drawn between the pair before and with Mourinho’s apparent interest in both men, perhaps this is why the fan came to their conclusion.

These Spurs fans clearly rate Cavani and will be hoping that Jose Mourinho can see off interest from Manchester United to secure his services this month.

What do we think?

Cavani has struggled with injuries so far this season and the last thing Spurs need is to bring in another striker only for him to be out injured. The 32-year-old’s goal record is impressive but Spurs may be better off looking at a slightly cheaper and younger option this month.
