Spurs fans were delighted to hear that Jose Mourinho will not be looking for a short-term solution to their striker problem in this month’s window.
Speaking ahead of the game against Norwich City, the Portuguese manager was asked about their ongoing search for a striker, to which he replied: “Yeah a new striker needs to come in but to do something you have to do something that is good for our future too, not just good for tomorrow” (via Football.London, as quoted by Ricky Sacks). Spurs are without Harry Kane after the England striker suffered a long-term injury in the New Year’s Day defeat against Southampton.
The North London club has been linked with a wide range of names throughout January, but midfielder Gedson Fernandes remains the only player brought in this month. Since Kane’s injury, Mourinho’s side is yet to score in the league in three games, so it seems clear that they need to bring in a replacement striker, but the Portuguese boss seems keen on finding a long-term option for the club this month.
Who would you rather Spurs sign this window?
Long-term less-experienced striker
Short-term experienced striker
Reaction from Spurs fans to Mourinho’s quotes on finding a striker can be seen in the tweets below. One fan mentioned how Daniel Levy would be “fuming” with the remarks made by the Portuguese manager and perhaps they have a point as the chairman is known to be a shrewd operator and one that likes to be rather prudent when it comes down to money (The Times).
To be honest, I’m sick & tired of all the speculation, when we all know the best we’ll get is some mediocre loanee, as our tight-fisted chairman will just not stump up for a top class player.

Levy will be fuming that he can’t do a 6 month loan deal on the cheap

Mourinho is no era builder, he’s aiming to delivery trophies inside two seasons. Levy needs to adjust his approach on this occasion. A bit of short termism. Bale and Cavani on loan. There I said it

Good

The only reason we don’t have a 2nd striker is because our chairman won’t spend top dollar on one. Period.

Let’s all be honest, Kane won’t be around for much longer so we should buy a long term replacement….

These Spurs fans are clearly delighted that Mourinho is looking for a long-term option and will be hoping to see the club act on that during the transfer window.
What do we think?
Spurs are in desperate need of a striker, with just 17-year-old Troy Parrott a natural in that position in their squad and Mourinho is probably right that they should look for a long-term option, rather than bringing in an older short-term striker, such as Edinson Cavani.
