A report in the Daily Mail claims that Newcastle United are set to move for Wylan Cyprien of Nice.

The 24-year-old is valued at £20m by his club, and Tottenham Hotspur are also believed to be interested.

Is Cyprien a player Newcastle need at the moment?

Yes, he could add some quality

No, good player but they need a striker

This is all the report says as from then on; it focuses on Steve Bruce’s transfer meeting with Mike Ashley.

The Daily Mail believe that Bruce will ask Ashley for one big-money signing to ensure Premier League safety and that player could be Cyprien.

Why would Newcastle want him?

The former France Under-21 international can play as either a central midfielder or just in front of the defence and has scored eight goals and provided four assists this season.

Cyprien’s main qualities, according to WhoScored, are his set-piece taking, long shots, passing, and key passes.

The 24-year-old is a creative box-to-box midfielder, and he could be an excellent addition to Steve Bruce’s side.

Surely Newcastle should prioritise other areas of the squad?

Cyprien has all the qualities to make an immediate impact for the Toon, but they are well stocked in the midfield department with Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Sean, and Matty Longstaff to choose from.

So, maybe they would be better off waiting till the summer to sign Cyprien?

What the Magpies really need is a striker who can support Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, and Yoshinori Muto – as all four have struggled to score goals this season with Joelinton the club’s only striker who has scored in the Premier League.

Cyprien could be a good signing, but surely if Ashley is to sanction a big-money transfer, it should be on a striker?
