Manchester City cruised to a comfortable victory over their local rivals Manchester United in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Fernandinho partnered Nicolas Otamendi at centre-back and the Brazilian has been hailed after another impressive display of leadership and composure.
The 34-year-old has seen his role switched this season as a result of a long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte, highlighting his versatility. The fans are highly appreciative of Fernandinho’s contribution this season and in years gone by.

What do we think?
There has been much speculation regarding Fernandinho’s future after his team-mate Riyad Mahrez seemingly let slip regarding the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder’s intentions in an interview with Sky Sports. However, since then it has been revealed that Manchester City have placed a contract extension on the table and that the Brazilian is expected to sign it.
Pep Guardiola would be expected to oversee a defensive rebuild this summer but despite his age, the player still clearly has a lot to offer to the squad whether that is in the heart of the midfield or in the centre of the defence. A City legend – you can understand why the fans are keen for him to stay.
