Leicester City are plotting a move for Southampton full-back Ryan Bertrand according to the Daily Mail.

It’s understood that the Foxes are bracing themselves for Ben Chilwell’s potential departure although there is currently no deal in place that would see the England international leave the King Power Stadium.

Bertrand is a UEFA Champions League winner having lifted the trophy with Chelsea back in 2012. He’s also an FA Cup winner and tasted UEFA Europa League glory during his time at Stamford Bridge. In the 30-year-old, Brendan Rodgers would be getting a highly-experienced professional and a player he has worked with before should the club make their reported interest official.

Chilwell is said to be on Chelsea boss Frank Lampard’s wish list and according to the Telegraph, the Londoner’s have a transfer kitty of £150m should they wish to do any significant business this month. The January window is notoriously a difficult one in which clubs are reluctant to sell their assets from fear of not being able to replace them.

The report in the Daily Mail suggests Chelsea could delay making a formal approach for the defender as they turn their immediate attention to bringing in a striker. Chilwell signed a new contract at the King Power stadium back in October meaning that if the Foxes were willing to negotiate with Chelsea they would be in a position to demand a significant transfer fee with the defender currently valued at £45m.
