Some Celtic fans have made it clear that they are desperate to see former central defender Filip Benkovic return to the club in the ongoing January transfer window.

Martin Reilly, who is known to be representing Hoops boss Neil Lennon, posted a rather cryptic tweet recently. It was a picture of him and Benkovic himself. The caption read: “Good to meet up with benko tonight at the Leicester game.”

Celtic fans: Do you want Benkovic back at Parkhead?

Get him up the road!

Benkovic had been on the bench for Leicester in their recent League Cup semi-final first leg draw against Midlands rivals Aston Villa. The game ended 1-1.

But the post has left many Hoops fans excited and they made it clear that they want the Croatian to comeback to Parkhead soon.

The former Dinamo Zagreb man had joined Celtic on a loan deal in the summer of 2018, days after he had joined Leicester City permanently from the Croatian club for a fee of £13million.

Last season, Benkovic was one of the Hoops’ options at the centre-back position. He had made 27 appearances in all competitions for the club. 19 of his appearances had come in the Premiership for the Hoops, as Benkovic also scored two goals and got one assist during that time. He had also made four appearances in the UEFA Europa League for the Parkhead-based side.

This season, Benkovic hasn’t seen too much first-team action at Leicester. Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu have been the Foxes’ regular first-team defenders so far, with Benkovic having made only one senior team appearance. He has seven outings for the Under-23s side.

What do we think?

Reilly posting an image with the defender can’t always be a sign. This is a player who has already been at the club and might just have a good relationship with the agent.

Having said that, bringing Benkovic back to Parkhead will not be a bad move for Celtic. Jack Hendry has been linked with a move to Hearts and to some lower league English clubs. That could allow Benkovic to come in and potentially stake a claim for a first-team place.
