Beren Cross has not shut down the idea of Manchester City youngster Ian Poveda joining Leeds United after his latest comments on Twitter.

When asked if the Poveda move was still likely, Cross stated that it’s the last he heard. Therefore, it appears he could be suggesting that a move for the 19-year-old is still on the table for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

It’s also been reported by the Daily Mail that Leeds are closing in on Poveda, making the potential move seem even more likely.

Who is Ian Poveda?

Poveda started life out in Barcelona’s youth setup, before joining Brentford in July 2014. He stayed with the London side until July 2016, where he then joined his current club Manchester City.

Currently playing for Manchester City’s U23s, Ian Poveda has played six matches in the Premier League 2 this season, scoring once and assisting twice from the wings.

The 19-year-old has also featured in the UEFA Youth League four times, having more success in front of goal here than in his domestic league, scoring twice but sadly getting zero assists.

Being capped twice at England U20s level shows that Poveda has real international potential, should he join Leeds United and play a key part in their success.

The Manchester City man can play on both the left and right wings, which could help him gain more minutes in Marcelo Bielsa’s side, as the flexibility will make him more available to cover for a wider range of potentially injured or suspended players.

Verdict

It’ll be interesting to see how much game time Marcelo Bielsa will give Ian Poveda, should the 19-year-old join this January. With Poveda being able to play on both wings, he may just be coming in as another option in the U23s, which Leeds United fans probably won’t be too happy with.
