With the Sunderland first-team currently struggling to win games, it was somewhat comforting for fans to see the U23s find a win against Spennymoor. It was a small victory, and one that shouldn’t be blown out of proportion, but a victory none the less.
Lee Connelly was the centre of attention during the match, scoring a hat-trick in the team’s 5-0 win. The 20-year-old did well to score three goals, despite missing a penalty earlier in the match. Sunderland fans were ecstatic with his performance and called for him to see first-team minutes.

Others were just happy to see a Sunderland team finally win a match. One fan suggested the players would be getting a ton of free pizza, referring to the club’s sponsorship deal.

What do we think?
Fans are willing to try anything at this point. With Connelly scoring a hat-trick, it seems natural to promote him to a team that is desperate for goals. However, it’s never quite that easy. Fans will just have to wait and find out what Phil Parkinson decides on the weekend.
