Some Portsmouth fans are hailing former player Robert Prosinecki as the best player in the club’s history following Gary O’Neil’s comments about the player.

Prosinecki is currently 50 years old and was most recently the manager of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He was a Croatian international towards the end of his career, after the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

The former midfielder also had a brief spell at Fratton Park in the early 2000s but had also played at Barcelona, Sevilla, Real Madrid and Red Star Belgrade.

Portsmouth fans: Is Prosinecki the best Pompey player ever?

On talkSPORT recently, Gary O’Neil was lauding Prosinecki and this left many Portsmouth fans reminiscing about their former player. Some are hailing him as the best player in the club’s history.

Prosinecki had arrived at Portsmouth towards the end of his career. It was his fourth-last club, as he had joined Olimpija Ljubljana and NK Zagreb after his spell at Fratton Park.

He was at Portsmouth for one season and that was when the club was in the Championship – the 2001-02 campaign. He had arrived at the club from Belgian club Standard Liege in the summer of 2001.

In the 2001-02 Championship season, which was then known as the First Division, Prosinecki had played 33 times in the league. He bagged a tally of nine goals during this time, helping them finish at 17th in the league that season. It was Manchester City who had won the First Division title by finish top of the table.

Outside of Red Star Belgrade, Prosinecki spent the highest amount of time at Real Madrid, where he made 71 appearances in all competitions and scored 12 times.

What do we think?

The impact and attention that Prosinecki brought to Portsmouth that season was immense. The signing had brought the club from the South Coast into the limelight for the right reasons. Even though he didn’t play for too long, the swagger with which he conducted himself is still remembered by many of the Pompey faithful.
