Some Celtic fans are desperate to see midfielder Callum McGregor get some rest as stats about his involvement in the current season emerge on social media.

The Hoops recently picked up a convincing 2-1 win over St. Mirren in the Premiership and are now back to being five points at the top of the table.

The win over St. Mirren saw McGregor score. James Forrest also scored a goal of his own. But after the game, a stat went viral of social media. McGregor has played more games and more minutes than any other player in Europe.

Celtic fans: Should McGregor be rested?

He deserves a rest

He deserves a rest

WE need him now more than ever

WE need him now more than ever

Some Celtic fans saw it and feel that Neil Lennon should rest McGregor.

The 26-year-old McGregor has been an important player for the Bhoys so far this season. In Neil Lennon’s 4-2-3-1 shape, he has been constantly partnering Scott Brown in the heart of the park.

He has played 35 games in all competitions. He has scored six times and also has a tally of three assists. He has played as many as 3126 minutes- the highest in European football.

The top five out of the top six players to play the most number of minutes in European football are from the Premiership. The top four are Celtic players. While McGregor is first, he is followed by Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and James Forrest. Alfredo Morelos is sixth, having played a total of 2454 minutes.

What do we think?

It is fair to say that McGregor needs rest as soon as possible. But with a game against Rangers coming up, that will be tough at the weekend. McGregor has been one of the Hoops’ best players and his influence can’t be put down. It is about using him well and Neil Lennon would have to do that.
