Scottish giants Celtic have been looking at the possibility of signing Everton target and Gillingham’s young goalkeeper Joe Walsh, as per the Gills boss Steve Evans.

The Hoops were linked with a move for the 17-year-old goalkeeper some weeks ago. It was said that giants like Tottenham, RB Leipzig, Manchester City and Everton were also interested in Walsh.

Recently, Gillingham boss Steve Evans was talking to the Scottish Sun and he revealed interest from both the Hoops and the Toffees.

He said: “Celtic have been here, Everton have been here, overseas clubs, a couple of German clubs saying they are looking at our young goalkeeper. But there is a difference between looking and being prepared to come back and buy someone.”

A rising star?

The 1992-born Walsh is thought to be one of the best young goalkeepers in lower league football in England currently. He isn’t completely a regular for Gillingham yet, but he is still slowly rising up the pecking order.

This is Walsh’s first season in the first-team. He hasn’t played a single game in League One so far. But the youngster has played three times in the EFL Trophy for the club so far, a competition that betting24 has Ipswich and Portsmouth as joint favourites for, keeping one clean sheet but also conceding a total of seven goals in total.

Despite not having played in the league for Gills, he is in the first-team squad quite often. Out of the total 21 games played in the league, he has been on the bench a total of 19 times. He was also on the bench in the club’s recent 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town. He has also been on the bench thrice in the FA Cup.

TIF Tactics

The goalkeeping situation at Parkhead isn’t completely certain currently. There is no certainty about whether Fraser Forster will be signed permanently or not, but fans will likely want him to stay. Scott Bain, who is currently the second-choice stopper, recently signed a new deal and Craig Gordon has his future up in the air as well.

In that sense, interest in Walsh does make sense. He is young and could present the future of the club. Signing him would show that the club is looking to refresh things in that position.
