Queens Park Rangers: Why signing Jaden Brissett is a bad idea

QPR should avoid signing Brentford youngster Jaden Brissett as Rangers already have players just like him.

According to the Daily Mail, Brentford midfielder Jaden Brissett is being monitored by QPR. However, the Rs should, perhaps, think twice about a potential move for the teen.

The highest level Brissett has played at is National League, when making two appearances for Maidenhead United in the league and one in the FA Cup. Both outings did not return anything; indeed, you could argue he only played 31 minutes in the league and 11 in the cup – but if the 19-year-old was really something special, we could have, perhaps, been able to make a name for himself at that level.

Apart from his unsuccessful time playing actual senior-level competition and not at development league level or in academy matches, QPR are also well staffed with young talent in the midfield, with the likes of Eberechi Eze and Bright Osayi-Samuel the main two for comparison.

Samuel, in particular, is someone to look at, with the 21-year-old playing in a similar position but to a much higher level. The 21-year-old has played 942 minutes in the Championship this season, scoring twice and assisting once in that time, and whilst that’s hardly groundbreaking, Samuel is playing in the second-highest tier of English football and not the National League.

To put their goalscoring careers into perspective, Brissett last scored against Grasshopper U21’s in a club-friendly for Brentford B, with the goal being from the penalty spot, whereas Samuel last scored against Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, a match where he also got an assist.

Eze unmistakably blows both of these players out of the park with his stats, with the 21-year-old scoring nine times and assisting four goals in 20 matches in the Championship already this season. However, it’s clear that right now Eze is on a different level to both men, so it’s not the fairest of comparisons.

Verdict

It’s clear that our view is to stay well away from this deal. Perhaps if QPR sign him either very cheaply or on a free and play him in the academy ranks, then the possibility of bringing him to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium would make a little more sense.

The Superhoops should continue to use Osayi-Samuel, as the 21-year-old is making slow and steady progression under Mark Warburton; give him another season or two and he’ll be looking like Eze for sure.
