Spurs fans were delighted to see Toby Alderweireld sign a new deal with the club on Friday morning, with the Belgian reportedly seeing his wage increase from £50,000 a week to £150,000 a week.
According to the Evening Standard (via Daily Hotspur), the 30-year-0ld defender’s wage was trebled when he signed his new deal, which sees him contracted to the club until 2023. The Belgian looked destined to leave the club at the end of the season when his old contract was set to expire, but it seems as if new manager Jose Mourinho played a large part in convincing the former Southampton man to extend his spell with the North London club.
Spurs have gained a reputation for having a small wage budget in recent years, with Alderweireld one of the lower earners, but it seems as if Mourinho and indeed Daniel Levy were both willing to offer the experienced defender whatever he wanted in order to keep him at the club. Although this comes as good news for both Mourinho and Spurs fans, it will be interesting to see whether other players receive a salary increase similar to that of Alderweireld’s in the next few months.
Did Alderweireld deserve the salary increase?

Brilliant news for the club. A must in any decent side- a rock of a CB. Plus great on the ball, can pop up with a goal and almost concrete set hair. Beautiful COYS

These Spurs fans clearly feel that Alderweireld is well worth his new contract at the club and seem delighted that he is set to stay at the club until 2023.
What do we think?
Considering some of the wages handed out by the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, £150,000 a week for a top-class defender in Alderweireld seems like a relative steal for the club. However, you do wonder how many other Spurs players will be hoping for their own salary increase after Alderweireld’s new contract.
